You may remember the brilliant satirical comic strip, Pogo, by Walt Kelly. Among Pogo’s most famous quotes was, “We have met the enemy and he is us.” When business gets bumpy, there is a temptation to look for someone to blame. Often we begin to doubt our colleagues or our leaders. Are they working hard enough? Are they skilled enough? So easily, we adopt Pogo’s attitude that the enemy is us.
It’s okay to ask questions, to challenge respectfully. Honest communication and introspection lead to teamwork and to trust. And eventually to the knowledge that the enemy – really – isn’t us.
