The area where the BeltLine and Ponce City Market meet has been an Atlanta hot spot since the 19th century.
After a local physician claimed water from nearby springs held rejuvenative properties, word about Ponce de Leon Springs spread. Residents began traveling to John Armistead’s beech grove to buy the medicinal water. By the early 1870s, a residential water delivery service was set up, and an omnibus drove Atlantans to and from the springs daily.
Ponce de Leon Springs eventually became so popular the Atlanta Street Railroad Company extended its line to the property, along today’s Ponce de Leon Avenue.
