Five minutes from our office sits Bellwood Quarry, a granite quarry that’s been seen in several productions filmed in Atlanta. The famous quarry is being converted into a 2.4-billion gallon reservoir, which would give Atlanta a 30-day water source.
A contest was held to name a 400-foot tunnel boring machine. Driller Mike, a tribute to Atlanta rapper Killer Mike, will drill a 12.5-foot diameter, five-mile tunnel for water to travel from treatment plants and the Chattahoochee.
Once complete, the 300 acres surrounding Bellwood Quarry will become Westside Reservoir Park, the city’s largest park.
