Take a look back at Atlanta’s first mayor

by The 100 Companies

Our city has seen its fair share of mayors throughout the years – some more notable than others. Have you ever wondered who Atlanta’s very first mayor was though? Moses W. Formwalt was born in 1820 in Tennessee and became the first mayor of Atlanta at the young age of 28 in the year 1848.

The city was then located in Dekalb County and had only recently been changed from its original name of Marthasville. Formwalt represented what was called the Free and Rowdy Party and during his one-year term he oversaw the continuing construction of the city, including a jail.
