As AJC Creative Director in 1992, I was supposed to be, well, creative. My boss offered me an office, so I painted the drab white walls my favorite color: teal.
It was an instant hit. Employees from news, circulation and accounting stopped in with coffee or lunch. One said she was emboldened to paint her bedroom dark red.
When others asked to paint their offices, management realized it had a problem: me. I was forced to re-paint it white. Days later, I was fired. In 1996, I visited the AJC and it had a new hallway accent color: teal!
