One of my favorite theaters for its intimate size and provocative selection of plays, Actor’s Express in King Plow Arts Center finishes its 27th season with The Whale and a reimagined version of Rent.
In The Whale, Artistic Director Freddie Ashley plays reclusive 600-pound Charlie, bent on self-destruction, yet desperate to reconnect with his daughter. Freddie steps off stage to direct a reimagined version of Rent, the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning musical about young artists in New York City’s East Village, struggling to make it.
The Whale plays through June 14; Rent runs from July 10 to August 9.
