A glimpse into the roots of Macy’s Great Tree

by The 100 Companies

The Macy’s Great Tree Lighting began in 1948, stemming from a suggestion by the former head of advertising for Rich’s department store, Frank Pallota. Macy’s Great Tree has been located on top of Macy’s at Lenox Square Mall for over 20 years but was at several previous locations after the tradition’s origin. In fact, it first resided on top of Rich’s department store in downtown Atlanta.

Since then, Macy’s Great Tree has been lit every Thanksgiving night, no matter the weather, from 7-8PM. This year marks the 74th annual lighting of Macy’s Great Tree, but will be virtual for most.
