In 1979, Pink Floyd released “The Wall,” Sony released the first Walkman, the USSR still existed and MARTA, as it’s known today, began.
After years of legislative work and a voter referendum, MARTA purchased the Atlanta Transit System in 1972, gaining full ownership of Atlanta’s main bus system. The organization spent the ’70s laying the groundwork for a rapid rail system, marking the start of a combined bus and rail service with the 1979 East Line opening.
By 1996, more than 20 major projects had been completed including the airport rail line, the north line and transportation outside the perimeter.
