From hell to healing: Cascade Springs Nature Preserve

During the Civil War, the Battle of Utoy Creek took place August 4-7, 1864, just south of Atlanta. Hundreds of soldiers lost their lives during the fight and the trenches forged can still be seen today in the Cascade Springs Nature Preserve.

Despite its tragic beginning, the waters of the creek were soon thought to have healing properties and a resort was built on the land. In 1970, the city of Atlanta purchased the area, which now contains multiple trails – including one to Utoy Creek.

Experience the creek while letting the waters be a reminder of our state’s history.
