Another mixed-use development called GlenCastle, located within walking distance of the BeltLine’s future Southside trail, is well underway. While the future of these historic properties is exciting, their history is also fascinating.
The Gothic-style building housed a prison from 1896 until 1924, when overcrowding caused it to move to a new location. Soon after, in 1927, Atlanta Public Schools purchased the eery, castle-like building, and it became home to the board of education.
In 1983, the facility was donated to an urban ministry to use as an apartment complex and community center for the city’s working poor.
