When gazing at Atlanta’s skyline, the distinct cylindrical shape of the Westin Peachtree Plaza immediately draws the eye. Opened in 1976, the hotel was designed by renowned architect John Portman and, at the time, was the city’s tallest building.
Since then, the hotel has gone through significant changes. A devastating tornado in 2008 ripped apart windows of the hotel, requiring 6,350 new windows and $70 million in repairs.
The Peachtree Plaza replaced the Henry Grady Hotel at the corner of Peachtree and what is now Andrew Young International Boulevard. Previously, one of Georgia’s governor’s mansions stood at this corner.
