Three years after graduating from Georgia Tech with an architecture degree, John Portman opened his first architectural firm in Atlanta in 1953, known today as John Portman & Associates.
Portman completed his first major project in Atlanta, the Peachtree Center Office Buildings, which established a model for multi-purpose complexes globally. Other Atlanta projects include AmericasMart Atlanta, the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, and The Westin Peachtree Plaza, a 73-story glass cylinder-shaped building.
In 2016, the 91-year-old Portman had the chance to redesign one of his original Peachtree Center buildings, originally built in 1965, into Hotel Indigo Atlanta Downtown.
