Ebenezer Baptist Church was first founded in 1886, but it wasn’t until the 1960s when it gained international fame – thanks to its famous member, Martin Luther King Jr.
Much of King’s childhood was spent at Ebenezer, where his father – “Daddy King” – was a pastor, and before that, his grandfather. Their family’s home was located just one block away from the Sweet Auburn church.
At just 19 years old, King became a co-pastor with his father, giving his first sermon – ‘‘The Three Dimensions of a Complete Life” – in 1960. After his assassination in 1968, King’s brother became Ebenezer’s co-pastor.
