What’ll Ya Have?

by Chris Schroder

Before the iconic drive-in occupied two blocks of North Avenue, built to accommodate 600 cars and 800 people dining inside, The Varsity served its first hotdog on the corner of Luckie Street and Hemphill Avenue.

Georgia Tech dropout Frank Gordy established the Luckie Street restaurant in 1928, then named the Yellow Jacket, but moved to accommodate the crowds of up to 30,000 on a Georgia Tech football game day. The classic carhop establishment, the largest in the world, features curbside service and the efficient inside counter has served at least four presidents and employed one beloved man for 55 years.
