Alex led Sugar on his arm on a long walk from the park at Dahu Lake to the Yangtze River. As they strolled along the street by Anqing’s harbor, Sugar tried to focus on Alex’s words, but they were so few of them. She decided to try to pry a few more out of him.
“I love you,” Sugar said as the last rays of the sun set over the western hills.
After an awkward pause, Alex said, “I feel much the same way towards you.”
Sugar’s eyes narrowed and drifted unhappily toward the sampans and boats in the harbor.
