MARTA and DNR collaborate to aid marine life

by The 100 Companies

In partnership with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) on the eco-friendly initiative called the Reef Project, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) shipped two retired railcars to Savannah last month.

The dismantled railcars were stripped of hazardous materials and will be deployed into the Atlantic Ocean to be repurposed as artificial reef material to enhance marine life off the Georgia coast.

In addition to becoming a habitat for sea creatures, DNR predicts in a year’s time that corals, sponges and other encrusting organisms will take hold and continue to grow, becoming a natural part of the environment.
