Charmed by Cuba

by Jan Schroder

Seventeen years ago today I landed in Cuba with buddy Charles Driebe and two associates to tour the exotic island that’s been forbidden to U.S. citizens since I was a toddler. They sought hidden musical artists and I adventure. We succeeded.

Locals welcomed us in their homes to eat grilled goat and celebrate a holiday blending Catholicism and voodoo. We were charmed by a land frozen in time, short on life’s luxuries, yet on fire with happiness – fueled by baseball, cigars, music, food, sex and rum.

American culture will undoubtedly overrun Cuba soon, diluting yet again a rare cultural roux.
