A Watershed Year for Crowdfunding

2016 is shaping up to be a watershed year for crowdfunding. Kickstarter has already helped creators raise over $2 billion to date and will soon see its 100,000th successfully funded project on the platform.

Meanwhile, other sites like GoFundMe and Patreon continue to see rapid growth in fundraising for other creative endeavors and personal causes.

But when we look back on 2016, the biggest story of the year will be the long-awaited arrival of equity crowdfunding on May 16, which will finally allow the general public to invest as little as $100 in privately held startups. I’ve been waiting.
