The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is cutting 2,400 jobs – nearly 10% of its workforce – with many losses affecting Georgia, where most CDC employees are based.
Headquartered in Atlanta, the agency reduced its workforce as part of a broader Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) restructuring. The cuts include scientists responsible for disease detection, diagnosis and treatment recommendations, raising concerns about Georgia’s preparedness for future outbreaks and its ability to sustain essential health programs.
Experts warn the layoffs will affect the local economy, as laid-off employees reduce spending on items like health care, housing, dining out and entertainment.
