The financial crisis in Greece is illustrative. How can an entire country follow a path for years that leads to failure?
Organizations can do the same thing. Rand McNally published the first road maps in 1904, and in 1920 published highway maps for Gulf Oil to be given to customers. The company owned the road map market for nearly 100 years, but missed the turn to digital mapping.
Managers are responsible for mapping the course to achieve strategic goals. They must continually re-assess the organization’s route and change it as needed. Otherwise, the organization may not reach the right destination.
