What does it mean to defund the police?

In the aftermath of the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers on Memorial Day, many have begun calling for defunding the police. While this idea seems radical, it simply reinvests police budgets from city, county, state and private police forces into things like mental health providers, education, housing and other quality of life issues.

Some cities have taken note and responded with support. In NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio pledged to reallocate money from the police to youth and social services and in LA Mayor Eric Garcetti shifted funds from the police for healthcare, jobs and peace centers.
