A new political era is upon us in Georgia after a new governor and hundreds of other lawmakers were sworn into office on Jan. 14.
A 40-day legislative session is now underway, in which newly elected Republican Governor Brian Kemp and other political leaders, including a freshman class making up nearly 18% of the legislative seats, will tackle a looming budget.
Kemp has also pledged to increase teacher salaries by $5,000, crack down on violent gang offenders and work on expanding gun rights. While Republicans still control the legislative branch, increase in Democrat seats will allow newfound influence.
