Can our republic survive if all is fake news?

by Jan Schroder

A couple years ago, I asked a journalist friend who had just taken a job with then Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed about news stories of the mayor’s blaring of blue lights and sirens to avoid traffic.

“That’s fake news!” he said, adding – accusingly: “And what does it say about you that you believe it?”

If our leaders classify all news as fake, how will we as a republic trust any information? How can we survive as a citizenry? We can’t. We’ll fall prey to a series of autocrats who destroy our civic discourse and demand complete loyalty to them only.
