Georgia’s Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones has established a Senate Special Committee to consider the elimination of Georgia’s state income tax. Chaired by Senator Blake Tillery, the 11-member committee is comprised of eight Republicans and three Democrats, aiming to map out a plan to phase out the tax by Dec. 15.
If approved, legislation to end the tax would be introduced during the 2026 General Assembly session. Supporters of the idea argue that a full repeal would boost Georgia’s competitiveness, while critics warn of severe revenue shortfalls that could harm public services and force possible offsets through higher sales or other taxes.
