The 2018 UN World Happiness Report ranks Sweden as the 9th happiest country on earth. Why? With a grin, the mayor of the town where I spoke last week summarized it in two words: “lätt liv.” Translation? Easy life.
Though heavily taxed (~50%), Swedes enjoy free education, free healthcare and generous leave for new parents. Plus, the Swedes highly value equality; they help each other find jobs and spouses, and condemn narcissism and one-upmanship.
In effect, Swedes are born on level 3 of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs (love/belonging) and as a society, help each other ascend higher.
