It is common practice in the auto industry to take good faith deposits from customers wanting to get the latest and greatest models as soon as they roll off the assembly line, but what Tesla is doing for their Model 3 launch is unprecedented.
Tesla, which has had difficulties meeting delivery deadlines in the past, has already secured over $325 million in customer deposits for the Model 3 despite the fact that it won’t ship until late in 2017.
Unlike Kickstarter pledges though, the $1,000 deposit that more than 325,000 trusting souls have put down is fully refundable.
