The Nazis saw to the total destruction of all wooden temples in Poland, including Gwoździec, an 18th-century synagogue known for its intricate roof. Artists (and UGA grads) Rick and Laura Smith Brown of Handshouse Studio reconstructed the synagogue over 10 years, enlisting 300 students and artisans from 16 countries.
The U.S. premiere of the film Raise The Roof, which documents the rebuilding of Gwoździec, is during the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival, Jan. 28 to Feb. 19 in several area theaters.
The Browns and filmmakers Yari and Cary Wolinsky will be attending two of the screenings. Watch a trailer here.
