Historic beginnings of Atlanta’s largest urban park

Freedom Park, located in the Inman Park neighborhood, was created in the 20th century. It began when nine Atlanta neighborhoods joined together to prevent the Georgia Department of Transportation’s effort to build a major highway system that would have demolished many historic homes and parks.

After sitting vacant during a more than 20-year battle, a 1991 resolution resulted in the design and construction of Freedom Park and Freedom Parkway. The park, compromised of 210-acres, now connects together the BeltLine Eastside Trail and many popular neighborhoods including downtown Atlanta, Inman Park, Old Fourth Ward, Candler Park, Poncey-Highland, Virginia Highland and others.
