The Wonder of Photography

by Jan Schroder

I pooled my high school graduation gifts and bought a Canon camera. I thought I’d be content being a newspaper writer, but I soon discovered I also loved photography.

One October weekend home from college — where I mostly photographed now forgettable landscapes — I wandered around downtown Atlanta, snapping photos of a beautiful day.

I found folks celebrating “Affirmation Atlanta” and “Stevie Wonder Day.” I slid up, capturing two former mayors, “Daddy” King, Stevie himself, Mayor Maynard Jackson and Wyche Fowler, who confirmed this week that’s him in “my Buddy Holly glasses!” I learned photos of people were much more memorable.
