Fourth Ward Park

by Chris Schroder

Last week, I discussed Atlanta’s original theme park: the Ponce de Leon Amusement Park. Where the merry-go-round once stood is now home to Historic Fourth Ward Park.

The “Atlanta Fourth Ward” area was established in 1874 and given its current name in 1937 after the state legislature decreased the city’s number of wards. Nearly 70 years later, the Historic Fourth Ward Park was founded by the new Atlanta BeltLine Inc.

Phase 1 construction, including the amphitheater and Clear Creek Basin, was completed in 2011. The next phase, which includes the playscape and skate park, was completed one year later.
