When Sugar walked into Sunday School, her eyes immediately focused on the serious Chinese girl seated in the front row. All her classmates were whispering when Sugar sat down and asked her friend Lucy about their exotic guest.
“She’s from Shanghai,” Lucy said. “She’s a Methodist!”
“My name is Soong May-ling and I’m a new student at Wesleyan College here in Macon,” the 15-year-old confidently told the class. “After I complete my studies here, I will return to my homeland, where I will dedicate my life to saving the poor children of China.”
Sugar knew then that she would too.
