Chapter 18: Eggs, Eggs!

by Jan Schroder

After nearly two years of imprisonment in the Anqing internment camp, Sugar noticed her legs began to atrophy from lack of food and exercise, so she began walking inside the perimeter of the wall topped by barbed wire.

On her third day, she heard a man walking parallel to her outside the wall who kept repeating one word. She listened intently and finally recognized it to be the Chinese words for “Eggs, eggs!”

She threw two coins over the wall and a few seconds later, she noticed several eggs being slipped through a hole in the bricks ahead of her.
