The train trip and ride from Grand Central had exhausted Sugar. At six years old, New York overwhelmed her.
Sugar sat alone on the sofa in The Waldorf. She could see her father in the bar, talking with a woman who had also been on the train. She felt so alone in the crowded lobby.
Suddenly, a man grabbed her, covered her mouth and ran up the stairs to a room where another woman opened the door.
The man threw Sugar on the bed. When the woman pulled Sugar’s new coat off and saw her legs, she began cursing.
