unemployment and the stimulus bill

Tens of millions of Americans receiving unemployment benefits have their eyes set on Congress as current federal benefits lapsed over this past weekend. The CARES Act, which was first passed in March, gave an additional $600 per week to those on unemployment, on top of state benefits received.

Many in Congress have considered a short-term extension, though it’s unclear whether this would include the full $600 amount or how long the extension would last. This discussion comes alongside a broader conversation around a coronavirus stimulus bill that both Republican and Democratic party leaders say is unlikely to pass until August.
