Ask for advice, not money

My mom always complained our family was full of lawyers and doctors, but not one businessperson.

At 37, when I launched a neighborhood newspaper group, we expanded too quickly and neared bankruptcy. My mother offered the best business advice ever: “Call Tom Cousins,” she said. “He neared bankruptcy once but turned it around and thrived. Don’t ask him for money. Just ask him for advice.” Tom saved our firm and we were partners for four years.

Today, my job is expanding The 100 Companies. After a slow month, I pivoted, asking prospects for advice. Worked like a charm. Thanks, Mom.
