Sugar lurched in the tiny bathroom when the ship dropped anchor.
She pulled back the curtain and saw dozens of sampans in the middle of the Yangtze River. She hurriedly gathered her belongings, ran down the gangway and jumped on one.
In port, a tall woman stepped forward to greet her. “I’m Edith Whittimore. Welcome to Anqing,” she said in southern accent. “Here’s your rickshaw.”
“You sound like you’re from South Carolina. It’s nice to be greeted by a fellow Confederate!” Sugar said.
“I’m from Camden,” Edith said. “How could you tell? But here in China, we’re all called Yankees!”
