It’s Time to Upgrade Your Thank Yous

“Thank you” is a staple of our Southern vernacular, but overuse can dilute it into a powerless, obligatory platitude. Instead, huge power lies in sincerity and specificity.

A 2010 study found that workers who received messages of appreciation from their bosses worked 50% harder the following week. A 2015 study found sincere expressions of gratitude bonded marriages better than financial well being or even communication.

Think of five people who deserve your appreciation this week. Instead of the obligatory “thanks,” try “I really appreciate how you XYZ because XYZ.” Carefully gauge their reaction; has their mood and your relationship improved?
