The impact of digital reading on our brains

by Michael Polzella

Digital screen use may be causing negative effects on reading comprehension, attention, memory and cognitive capabilities. When screen reading, the habit is to skim, thereby reducing the time allocated to get the general gist of the content.

But when it comes to longer texts that require a deeper process, our bad screen-reading habits carry over causing us to miss nuances of language and the story’s emotional journey. The end result is an atrophy of our reading brains.

With all signs pointing to even more digital reading in our future, time spent with physical books will become an important exercise.
