People choose to separate for a variety of reasons: as a stepping stone to divorce, because divorce is cost prohibitive, or for religious reasons, to name a few.
When you choose to become separated from your partner, you should be aware of the legal ramifications, which vary from state to state.
Don’t abruptly change your financial situation, cancel credit cards, take someone off an insurance policy or close joint accounts. Don’t cut your spouse off from the children. And finally, don’t have relations with your soon-to-be ex as that may affect how a judge views the terms of your divorce.
