A group of lifelong friends gathered outside for a socially distanced dinner to celebrate my birthday last month. Aware of our times, we avoided discussion of politics and the recent election.
Someone mentioned COVID-19. A physician countered it was nothing more than a bad cold. Others were horrified. Conversation broke down and the dinner ended soon after.
Democrats and Republicans each won last month. Can we, in the old Latin phrase, launch a modus vivendi – an agreement allowing conflicting parties to coexist in peace until a final settlement arrives later? America has just that opportunity now. So do my friends.
