I spoke last week with a longtime friend, CEO of a mid-sized company. When I asked how he was, he replied, “I’m reinventing myself.” He’s still CEO and still at the same company. He’s forcing organizational change so that his company will be better able to handle future challenges. And the change begins with re-defining his role.
Change is uncomfortable, but inevitable. Markets change, customer needs change, competitors change. And, of course, people grow older and eventually retire. Organizations cannot succeed without responding to these unstoppable changes.
Reinvention entails wholesale change, but good managers take the lead on it.
