Twenty years ago I visited a company that managed computer networks. On the tour, I saw high-powered engineers everywhere.
I remarked that this was expensive talent, but the CEO smiled and showed me the “toy room.”
The toy room held all the latest equipment. “I buy every new product immediately. Our engineers like to play with it and learn all the latest technology.”
The toy room was a benefit that had real value for his employees. It allowed them to tinker and to stay on the cutting edge of technology.
Good managers know that cash is not the only motivator.
