Angels and Demons

by Sally Schroder

Appropriately, last week’s pep rally at my son’s school was themed “Angels and Demons.” Demons outnumbered angels, but in organizations we need a balance of each.

“Angels” mentor, teach and encourage. They focus on what’s going well. They act as cheerleaders, urging those around them to aim high and to do their best. “Demons” mentor and teach also, but they focus on what can be done better. They act as stern taskmasters, setting the performance bar high and challenging others to reach it.

Organizations need both cheering angels and demanding demons. In balance, they drive performance and make us better
