Metro Atlanta experienced a population decline for the first time in nearly three decades.
According to recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates, more people moved out of the region than moved in during the year ending June 2024, resulting in a net loss of about 1,330 residents. While births and immigration still support growth, experts warn this shift may signal the end of Georgia’s long-running boom. Factors behind the exodus include soaring home prices, traffic and tight housing supply.
Many former residents relocated to smaller Southern metros like Chattanooga, Greenville and Huntsville searching for affordability and better quality of life.
