Flournoy Holmes stayed up day and night for nearly a week in 1971 to work with a friend on artwork that adorned the inside of one of rock ‘n’ roll’s most famous double albums: The Allman Brothers’ Eat a Peach.
The artist had originally attended the University of Georgia on a swimming scholarship, but became the first student to be kicked off for refusing to cut his hair. Luckily for him – and for many music fans – he retained his artist scholarship.
Flournoy designed dozens of other famous Southern musicians’ album covers and continues to paint and play today in Virginia-Highland.
