Home of late Southern author reopens to public

The Milledgeville, Georgia, home of famed American author Flannery O’Connor has reopened to the public after nearly a year of restoration and repair.

O’Connor lived with her mother at Andalusia for 13 years while it operated as a dairy farm. Life at Andalusia influenced many of the Southern Gothic writer’s fictional stories, and is where the bulk of her literary work was completed.

In August 2017, the site was gifted to O’Connor’s alma mater, Georgia College. Guests can tour the grounds and meet residents Mrs. Shortley and Astor, two peacocks named for characters in O’Connor’s short story, “The Displaced Person.”
