Forty three years ago this week Alex Cooley opened his Electric Ballroom, Atlanta’s legendary rock venue, in Midtown’s Georgian Terrace Hotel.
It became a favorite hangout: Memories include seeing Kansas on Dollar Night, when admission and roast beef sandwiches were $1, and Atlanta Rhythm Section. Another was Bruce Springsteen’s first-ever Atlanta concert. Cooley later recalled Bruce asked him to turn off the cash registers because their noise was interfering with the band’s sound. Surprisingly, he complied.
Cooley brought decades of great music here – from Atlanta International Pop Festival to Music Midtown – before dying in 2015. He’s still sorely missed.
