During a private ceremony held on the 14th anniversary of former Mayor Maynard Jackson’s death, a 14.5-foot monument was erected at Oakland Cemetery in honor of Atlanta’s first African-American mayor.
Designed by Jackson’s widow, Valerie Richardson Jackson, the 14-ton granite monument represents the four aspects of Jackson’s legacy – the City of Atlanta, the scales of justice, the Olympic rings and the Atlanta airport. “My ultimate goal was to build a fitting monument to this exceptional man, which will stand for centuries to come,” she said.
Details for a public ceremony honoring Jackson will be announced soon.
