From the simple to the sublime

by Jan Schroder

I was a few steps ahead of my son Thomas and his daughter Annie, nearly 20 months old, when we visited the mall weeks ago. I instinctively snapped a quick photo and posted it on Facebook.

The image captured more attention than my other posts in recent years. Was it their moment together, stride for stride, their disparity in height, their intimate yet simple moment holding hands, recalling a similar moment when Thomas was young? Or was it Annie’s determined look to charge into her future, guided by her father’s steady, loving gaze?

Or was it all that, in one?
