Originally a short film block at the 2013 Atlanta Film Festival, New Mavericks brought female-directed films featuring strong female leads to the forefront.
In 2015, the program expanded to feature films and extended beyond the Atlanta Film Festival to include networking events every third Wednesday at Java Vino. This year, New Mavericks received sponsorship from Spanx and The Sarah Blakely Foundation to fund the New Mavericks Award, first presented at the 2016 festival with a $5,000 cash prize.
